What to Know When Buying Grains...

Starter culture of kefir

There are many sources for kefir grains on the internet; however, some of these sources may not be up to par. If you decide to buy your fresh grains from us, we’ll guarantee that your grains will arrive viable and ready to produce healthy kefir. Powders and dehydrated grains can take several rounds to reactivate and start reproducing.

Things to consider when buying milk kefir grains:

  • Make sure you are getting real grains and not a powdered starter or dehydrated grains.  Fresh active grains are the authentic way to make kefir and can last forever while powdered starter has to be purchased again over time.
  • It’s always better to get live grains than dehydrated grains. While dehydrated grains do recover and produce kefir, you’ll waste a half-gallon of milk in the process and they can take months to start growing.
  • Make sure you are getting at least one tablespoon of grains to start with. If you only get a teaspoon you will be making miniature portions of kefir the first week or two. On the other hand, anything more than a tablespoon is usually unnecessary because kefir doubles in size each week
  • Be wary of cheap grains. Keeping grains fed daily with fresh milk is costly. If you are in doubt ask the vendor how the grains are raised and if they are stored in a refrigerator. Grains that are refrigerated take a couple weeks to recover and balance out.
  • If you order your grains elsewhere be sure to ask how soon they will ship. Many people that sell kefir have waiting lists several weeks long.
